Do you say that simply because you have no title to your name? Yet it's actions that make a man and not flowery words with little meaning.
[ At least, that's his personal opinion. But he also does understand. The princess and the commoner, while common enough in fairy tales, never really does work out in reality.
At least, not in their respective homelands. ]
In any case, titles hardly mean anything here. None of us are lords or ladies in Nysa, or even princesses.
They may mean nothing here but to me she'll always be a Princess.
It's not just the lack of a title...she and I come from not just different classes but different planets altogether. Those from my planet are seen as sub human beings and while I served under her on Mars I was reminded of my place daily. Not by her, of course. Princess Asseylum never thought in such a way. In fact, she was in love with the planet I came from...but it's hard, to think better of myself, after so many years of being told I'm worthless.
I know it's foolish...but I fear rejection from her more than anything else.
Old habits are hard to break, as they say, and newer thought processes even harder to build. But I commend you for trying, and I'm sure your princess can see just how hard you work to improve yourself each day.
Though if the subject makes you uncomfortable, I apologize. It was not my intent to pry.
But I'm certain she will. She does not strike me as the type to be swayed easily by fickle moods and petty reasons. And you do not strike me as the type to behave in an immature or rash fashion.
[ At least, not moreso than any young man his age. ]
We wouldn't be human if we didn't let our emotions get the best of us every now and then.
In any case, I sincerely hope that you and Princess Asseylum remain good friends for many years to come. She's very lucky to have you as a friend, and you her.

It's just sometimes I catch myself falling into old thought patterns. I'm trying to overcome it.

No, it's okay. You don't need to apologize. I really don't mind it.

Your assumption is correct - she isn't the type to act that way. I do my best to use my head, but sometimes my emotions get the best of me.
